Victoria Street was laid in the late part of the 19th century. Until the mid-19th century, the area where Victoria Street is located was coastal mudflats with wooden piers running down to the sea.


George Town became the first municipality in the Federation of Malaya to have a fully elected council, and on 1 January 1957, the municipality became a city by a royal charter granted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, becoming the first (and until 1972, the only) city in the Federation.

Named after Edward VII, the king of the United Kingdom (and the British Dominions and Emperor of India), who reigned from 22 January 1901 until his death on 6 May 1910.
